Women’s Soccer Ties U. of R., 1-1 (2OT)
ROCHESTER, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team used a late second half goal to tie the University of Rochester in the championship game of the 2009 Flower City Classic held at the University of Rochester. The Yellowjackets received the tournament trophy with a goal difference of three to the Hawks two.
The Yellowjackets took the lead in the 37th minute when Ellen Coleman picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net from 15-yards out just inside the left post from the left wing.
The Hawks would tie the contest in the 87th minute when Emily Buckner (Pine Bush) saved the ball along the right sideline and crossed to the middle. Rebecca Devlin (State Island/Moore Catholic) settled the ball then found the back of the net with an 18-yard chip shot into the top left corner of the goal.
With two minutes left, Rochester took a corner kick and Eileen Boylan shot hit the crossbar as the Hawks escaped giving up a late goal.
Bridget Lang earned the tie in net allowing one goal and saving one shot in 65 minutes of play. Starter Celeste Hornbach played the first half before Lang came in. Rochester improves to 2-0-1 overall.
The Hawks were outshot 20-3 in the contest.
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside/Baldwin) earned the tie in net, saving seven shots. Vega was named Best Defensive Player of the tournament. The Hawks improve to 1-1-1 overall.
New Paltz returns to the field Wednesday, September 9th for their home opener against cross town rival Vassar at 4 p.m.
