#15 Cortland rolls past Hawks in women’s lacrosse

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s lacrosse team hosted nationally ranked (#15) Cortland Tuesday evening on the Turf Field.  The Hawks fell to the Red Dragons 19-3.

Danielle Torre led the Red Dragons with seven points on the evening with five goals and two assists and Jess Fritz added four goals in the victory.  Lindsay Abbott, Brianna Shost and Alyssa Hoover all added two goals apiece for the Red Dragons.

Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West), Sam DelGaudio (Northport, NY/Northport) and Bridget Grover (Rockville Centre, NY/Holy Trinity) all score a goal apiece for the Hawks. 

Cortland scored 54 seconds into the game and would score the first 11 goals of the game.  The Hawks got on the board with 7:32 remaining in the first half when Bennett beat the Red Dragon goalkeeper.  Three minutes later the Hawks netted their second goal when Grover found the back of the net.  Cortland would add a goal with 1:57 remaining and would go into the half leading 12-2.

In the second half, Cortland would outscore the Hawks 7-1 with the lone goal coming from DelGaudio with 16 minutes remaining.

Julia Donato (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had seven groundballs and four draw control wins and Helene Rotolo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) had four groundballs and two draw control wins.

Cortland’s Amanda Caloia recorded the win in net allowing two goals in the first half.  Brianna Straut played the second half and allowed one goal and made one save.  Cortland improves to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC.

Hawks goalkeeper Lorraine Vultaggio (Babylon, NY/Miller Place) recorded the loss in net allowing 19 goals and saving 13 shots.  New Paltz falls to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the SUNYAC.

The Hawks return to the field Saturday, April 18 against Buffalo State at 1 p.m. on the campus of SUNY New Paltz.
