Softball Drops Two to Wisconsin-Superior
Ft. Myers, FL – The SUNY New Paltz softball team completed their spring trip in Ft. Myers, FL on Saturday with a double-header against the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS). The Hawks were shutout in game one 8-0 and fell short in game two 4-3.
New Paltz heads back to New York with a 6-6 record and will travel to Newburgh to face Mt. St. Mary on Wednesday March 25th before hosting their home opener on Friday March 27th against conference opponent Geneseo at 3pm.
The Yellowjackets out hit the Hawks 12-3 in game one as sophomore Courtney Costello took the loss on the mound. She allowed five runs and struck out two batters in two innings. Alyssa Oliva threw five innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Rose Dovi registered two of the Hawks three hits as she went 2-for-3 from the plate while Dale Cornelius had the other hit.
The Yellowjackets scored four runs on five consecutive hits in the first inning and added one run on two hits in the second inning for the early 5-0 lead. Wisconsin-Superior added a single run in the fourth, sixth and seventh inning to complete the scoring.
In game two, the Hawks tallied three hits to the Yellowjackets eight hits. Cassie Barcavage, Jackie Masseo and Justine Scutaro tallied the hits for New Paltz. Devon Kelly took the loss on the mound allowing four runs and striking out four batters in a complete game.
Masseo hit a two run RBI double to left center with two outs for a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jenna Curcio and Barcavage scored on the hit as Curcio reached on an error and Barcavage walked.
The Yellowjackets took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on five hits and one error. With one out and runners on first and second, UWS hit a two run RBI double to tie the game. UWS scored their third run on an error and the game winning fourth run came on an RBI single up the middle to score a runner on third before the Hawks got the batter out at second on a throw from centerfield.
Justine Scutaro cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning with a solo homerun but the Hawks would fall short.
