Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Mt. St. Vincent
The men’s volleyball team traveled to Mt. St. Vincent Tuesday night and swept the Dolphins 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 31-29). The Hawks improve to 14-10 on the season and 5-3 in NECVA metro divisional play.
Senior Ryan Huberty (Liverpool) led the attack with match-high 13 kills on 24 attempts with five errors to hit .333 on the night. First year Kevin Stross (Port Washington/Schreiber) amassed 11 kills on 19 attempts with three errors to go with four blocks and three aces. Jake Moore (Cortlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson) added five kills a match-high seven digs with first year Frank Ciccone (Long Beach) dished out 28 assists.
In the first set, the score was tied at 26-26 before three errors by the Dolphins a kill by Stross gave the Hawks the 1-0 lead. Stross finished the game with five kills as the Hawks hit .440. Huberty added four and Ciccone handed out 12 helpers.
Set two was tied 17 times with the last one coming at 28-28 before a kill by Huberty and an error by Mt. St. Vincent completed the scoring. The set was tied 18-18 and then the Dolphins went on a 5-1 run for their largest lead of the game before New Paltz battled back. Junior Dan Liberto (Rush/Rush Henrietta) led the Hawks with four kills and sophomore Andrew Cassius (Brooklyn/Midwood) dished out 12 assists.
The final set was even at 22-22 before the teams exchanged points back and fourth until 29-29 before the Hawks pushed for two points to end the match. The final two points came down to another kill by Huberty and an error by the Dolphins. Huberty totaled seven of his kills in the final set to lead the Hawks.
New Paltz returns to action on Thursday March 12th when they host Baruch at 7pm in the Hawk Center.
