Baseball opens 2009 with pair of losses to St. Cloud
PHOENIX, AZ- The SUNY New Paltz baseball team opened the 2009 campaign against Division II St. Cloud State College in Phoenix, Arizona at Grand Canyon University. The Hawks fell to St. Cloud in the first game 19-3 and 9-4 in the second game.
In game one of the double-header St. Cloud scored early putting up three runs in the first inning and then added two in the top half of the third to take a 5-0 lead. The Hawks responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer by senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) to cut the lead to 5-2. In the top half of the fourth inning, St. Cloud put up a four spot to take a commanding 9-2 advantage. St. Cloud would score one in the sixth and nine in the seventh to put the game away. In the bottom of the seventh Terlecky added a RBI single.
Terlecky finished the game 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI’s with a homerun. Senior Devin Scalabrini (Peekskill, NY/Mahopac), freshman Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and sophomore Michael Marash (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) each added a hit apiece in the loss for the Hawks.
Senior pitcher Jonathan Shanks (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook) recorded the loss on the mound giving up ten hits, ten runs (eight earned) in five innings and striking out two. The Hawks fall to 0-1 on the season.
In the night cap, the Hawks opened up the top half of the inning with one and scoring three in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. St. Cloud tallied three in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for the first in the game, 5-4. St. Cloud would add four more in the bottom half of the sixth to beat the Hawks 9-4.
Paulicelli led the Hawks going 2-for-2 from the plate with two runs and Terlecky was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI’s. Freshman Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 2-for-4 with one run.
Senior pitcher Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) recorded the loss on the mound giving up four earned runs on eight hits over five innings and striking out eight. The Hawks fall to 0-2 and return tomorrow against St. Mary’s (MN).
