Hawks hold off the Cadets from Norwich, 57-52
NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team held off Norwich, 57-52, Tuesday night in the Hawk Center on the campus of SUNY New Paltz.
In the first half, the Cadets jumped out to a 9-3 lead, but the Hawks responded with seven straight points in 35 seconds to take a 10-9 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the half. The Hawks trailed by three points with 4:57 left and Kaitlin Clifford (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) tied the game at 22-22 with a three-pointer.
The Hawks went into intermission with a 30-29 lead, led by Carly Minehan (Albany, NY/Albany) with 11 points and four rebounds. Artie Williams (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) chipped in with five points and seven rebounds and Clifford added eight points for the Hawks.
The Cadets were led by Christine Daniels with eight points and four rebounds and Erica Rate added six points.
In the second half, the Hawks trailed 33-32 with 15:23 remaining, before taking the lead off a lay up from Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, NY/Immaculate) and never trailed again. Farrell finished the game with seven points, six rebounds and a team high five assists. Williams finished with a double-double, 13 points, eight in the second half and 11 rebounds. Minehan finished with 13 points and Clifford added 12 points for the Hawks in the victory.
The Cadets were led by Ally Daniels and Christine Daniels with ten points a piece. Tara Stevenson added five points and 11 rebounds in the efforts for Norwich. Norwich falls to 6-4 on the season.
The Hawks improve to 7-2 on the season and will travel to Stevens tomorrow for a non-conference game.
