New Paltz women’s basketball picks up first win of season

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team picked up their first win of the season, 69-62, Friday night against Wheaton College in the New Paltz Tip-Off Classic.

The Hawks used a 15-4 second half run to take a ten point lead and never looked back, sparked by Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, NY/Immaculate) three-pointer to open the half. Wheaton pulled within one point, but was unable to take the lead from the Hawks. The Hawks were led by Carly Minehan (Albany, NY/Albany) with ten points in the second half and finished with a game high 23 points and eight rebounds. Zoe Cohen (Brooklyn, NY/The Berkeley Carroll School) added 11 ponts and Kaitlin Clifford (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) chipped in with ten points. Nicole Sarcone (State Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) dished out seven assists to lead the Hawks.

Krystin Hickey led Wheaton with 15 points and seven rebounds and Andrea Bailey added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

In the first half, Wheaton jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead, but the Hawks responded with a 16-6 run to take the one point lead. Wheaton would hold a 37-36 lead at the half.

The Hawks improve to 1-1 on the season and will play for the championship tomorrow at 6 p.m. against William Smith.

Wheaton falls to 2-1 on the season and will play Farmingdale State tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
