NCAA Regional Run for Cross Country
The New Paltz men’s and women’s cross country teams completed their season at the NCAA Division III Regional Cross Country Championships held at St. Lawrence University on Saturday November 15th.
The men’s 8K race went off at 11am and the Hawks finished 23rd out of 34 teams. The Cortland men’s team took first with 47 points to runner up NYU with 84. Peter Kosgei of Hamilton won the individual crown in 25:18.
Sophomore Joe Gentsch led the way for New Paltz, finishing 65th out of 234 runners with a time of 27:29. Junior Nick Avello finished 135th in 28:55 and first year Mike Zelensky was three seconds behind in 28:58. Ryan Cassidy and Dexter Larsen completed the scoring five in 29:52 and 30:07, respectively. Kevin Snyder was in the sixth spot for the Hawks in 30:26 and Robert Webster crossed the finish at 30:42.
The women’s 6K race was won by Geneseo with 64 points to finish ahead of Cortland (72) and St. Lawrence (125). New Paltz finished 24th, led by junior Lisa Cassaro. Cassaro finished 82nd out of 218 runners in a time of 25:36. Sophomore Danielle Harmon took 115th in 26:27 and Olga Stulov crossed in 26:58. Senior Stephanie Albinski ran a 27:27 and first year Sara Wenger completed the scoring five in 27:51. Rebecca Shurriff and Amanda Ward finished in 28:10 and 28:12, respectively. The winning time of 22:31 was posted by Wendy Pavlus of St. Lawrence.
