Bergmann Scores Game Winning Goal Over Vassar

The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team converted a penalty corner with 17 minutes to play en route to a 2-1 victory over Vassar on Wednesday night. The Hawks snapped a seven game losing streak to improve to 2-9 on the season.
The winning goal, by junior Kristen Bergmann (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) came off a penalty corner that was initiated by senior Heather McCoy (Sayville, NY/Connetquot). Her pass went to sophomore Sarah Schloss (Bryant Lake, NY/North Warren) who fed Bergmann in the circle for her second goal of the season.
New Paltz scored the game’s first goal on a well executed corner, as sophomore Jessie Moore (Walden, NY/Pine Bush) converted off a Schloss assist.
The Brewers were on the attack to start the second half, as Rachel Lowenthal fired two shots, one that was a pinpoint stop by Hawks junior goalie Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock, NY/Onteona Central) who registered six saves in the game.
It was Lowenthal’s stopped shot by Tong that deflected back to Vassar senior Emily Fare, who was able to convert that rebound into a game tying 1-1 goal in the 42nd minute.
Eight minutes later, after frenetic play at both ends, Bergmann got the game winner.
New Paltz will host SUNY Cortland in their final SUNYAC game of the season on Saturday, October 18.
