Nicomini Nets Both Goals in 2-1 Victory Over Western Connecticut

Sophomore Lauren Nicomini (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) netted both goals for SUNY New Paltz in the 2-1 victory over Western Connecticut on Wednesday. New Paltz improves to 1-2 on the season while the Colonials fall to 1-3.

Nicomini netted her first goal at 11:27 off a pass from senior Marissa Costello (Brick, NJ/Brick Township). Twelve minutes later Nicomini found the back of the cage when she tipped the ball into the lower right side off a cross from sophomore Jess Moore (Walden/Pine Bush) for the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Western Connecticut’s Sara LeFevre cut the deficit to one at 61:43, when she knocked in the deflection off her first shot which was saved by New Paltz goalie Grace Watson (Bayville/Locust Valley). The Colonials were awarded five corners in the last eight minutes of the game but were unable to find the equalizer due to a stellar performance by Watson in the cage and the defensive unit of Ann Marie Rudd (Garden City Park/New Hyde Park Memorial), Kristy Amendola (Brewster) and Kelly Brogan (Farmingville/Sachem East).

Watson made 14 save in net as the Colonials out shot the Hawks 15-9 on goal and held the advantage in corners 21-4. Christina Natale made seven saves for Western Connecticut.

New Paltz returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Kean at 1pm.
