Motzkin Has Record Setting Day in Sweep Over Oswego
NEW PALTZ, NY — Senior Lauren Motzkin etched her name in the record books this afternoon as the softball team swept Oswego in a SUNYAC doubleheader, 6-5 and 5-0. Motzkin tied the all-time career record for hits with 151 and became the all-time steal leader with 34. She tied Gina Marotta’s (’98) record of 151 hits and passed Danielle Formatto (’98) who had 33 steals.
In game one the Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the come from behind 6-5 win. With one out Dale Cornelius reached on an error by the second baseman and advanced to second on the overthrow. Liz Tong came in to pinch run and moved to third on a single up the middle by Justine Scutaro. With runners on first and third and two outs, Gina Marano came up with a big hit over the second baseman to score Tong and advance Scutaro to third. Amalia DiTrapani reached on an error by the first baseman, which sent Scutaro home for the game tying run. Brittany O’Hara went into pinch run for Marano who was on third and scored on a wild pitch to end the game.
Oswego took a 4-0 lead in the third inning before New Paltz cut the deficit to 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third. Oswego scored their final run in the fifth before the Hawks scored one run in the sixth, setting the stage for the come from behind victory.
Erin Fitzpatrick was 2-4 from the plate, both doubles, with one RBI to lead the Hawks. New Paltz totaled seven hits and left nine on base. Oswego registered eight hits and left eight on base. Courtney Costello earned the win for New Paltz allowing three hits and one run in three innings.
In game two, New Paltz took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Motzkin reached on an error, scoring Cilmi. The Hawks increased their lead to 3-0 in the third with back-to-back RBI singles up the middle by Motzkin and Cornelius. The Hawks completed the scoring with a run in the fourth and the final run in the sixth.
Motzkin and DiTrapani each had two hits with an RBI to lead the Hawks as the team totaled eight hits. O’Hara pitched a complete game and earned shutout allowing six hits and one walk.
New Paltz returns to action on Friday when they travel to Morrisville at 3pm before returning home on Saturday to host SUNYIT at 1pm. New Paltz will honor its seniors on Saturday as they play in their final home game.
