Women’s Basketball Downs Fredonia 83-71
NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball team hosted Fredonia tonight and defeated the Blue Devils 83-71 to extend their win streak to seven games. The Hawks advance to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia falls to 5-8 and 0-5 in conference play.
New Paltz led 22-20 before going on a 19-6 run to open up the game. The Hawks shot 57.9% from the floor, 50% from the arc and 75% from the line in the opening stanza en-route to a 52-37 intermission.
Fredonia opened the second half with a 14-4 run to cut the lead to five with 14 minutes remaining but that is as close as they would come. The Hawks held a double digit lead throughout the final eight minutes to control the game.
"As a team we were not very happy with the overall play, especially defensively, and need to turn things around for Buffalo State tomorrow," stated head coach Jamie Seward. "Fredonia played very aggressive and took advantage of our mistakes on defense. However, it was good to see Kristin Sitek playing back up to her potential and we received a big lift from Starr Lederer off the bench in the first half. Sarah Salvo continued her fine overall play and Abbey DeRossi, Katie Becofsky, Maggie Farrell and Chelsea Clarke gave us a lift in the second half when needed."
First year Artie Williams scored 10 of her team high 16 points in the first half and grabbed seven boards. Sophomore Kristin Sitek finished with 14 points and classmate Kristen Caban chipped in with 12 points. Amber Sohns scored all of her 10 points in the first half and Nicole Sarcone dished out seven assists.
New Paltz returns to action Saturday afternoon when they host Buffalo State at 2:00 pm.
