Women’s Basketball Downs Geneseo 56-37
NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball team hosted Geneseo tonight in their home opener and defeated the Knights 56-37. New Paltz led 25-14 at the half after using a 7-0 run to open the game at 17-10. In the second stanza the Hawks led by ten before extending their lead to 22 after a 12-0 run, with New Paltz utilizing all options as four different players scored in that time frame.
"At times we looked very good and showed glimpses of what we are capable of doing," said New Paltz coach Jamie Seward. "Now we need to be consistent for 40 minutes."
New Paltz forced 21 Geneseo turnovers as the Knights only shot 32.6% compared to the Hawks’ 44.7%. "Kristen Caban was a key factor in pressuring their point guard. She slowed down their offense 10-12 seconds in the back court consistently."
Sophomore Chelsea Clarke led the Hawks with 11 points on 5-6 from the floor and senior Amber Sohns added 10 points and five rebounds. Nicole Sarcone finished with a career high nine assists and grabbed six boards and classmate Kristen Caban chipped in with eight points.
"Amber showed outstanding leadership tonight. Sarah Salvo and Carly Minehan each had great games despite not having big numbers in the boxscore."
The Hawks advance to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC and will return to the court tomorrow when they host the College of Staten Island at 4pm.
