Hawks Sweep Wildcats, 7-1 and 7-3
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team hosted SUNYIT today in a SUNYAC doubleheader and swept the Wildcats, 7-1 and 7-3.
In game one, the Hawks took an early 2-0 led in the first. In the second inning, Joelle Von Bischoffhausen nailed a homerun over the left field fence. Gina Marano walked and advanced to second on a single by senior Amy O’Brien. Lauren Motzkin followed with a two run RBI double. SUNYIT scored their lone run in the fourth inning, when Stacey Phelps hit an RBI single, scoring Andrea Beach. The Hawks added three runs in the fifth inning. Melyssa Cilmi singled up the middle to start the inning and advanced to second on a single by Allison Ferullo. Marano loaded the bases on a hit by pitch. The next pitch was wild, scoring Cilmi and advancing other runners. O’Brien hit an RBI to score Ferullo for the final score, 7-1. Motzkin led the offense going three for four, including two doubles. First year Dale Cornelius and Cilmi each registered two hits. Kelly O’Hea earned the win, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three.
In game two, the Hawks took to the board in the second inning on an RBI single by Marano. In the third inning, the Hawks registered five hits and three runs, including a homerun by Cilmi. New Paltz scored one run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by O’Brien. The Wildcats took to the board in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Stacey Phelps and Mary Casillo. SUNYIT tacked on the third run of the inning due to an error by New Paltz. The Hawks tacked on two runs in the seventh inning, including a sacrifice fly by O’Brien and an error by SUNYIT.
Amalia DiTrapani and Von Bischoffhausen each had three hits to lead the offense. Michelle Reinke pitched a complete game to earn the win, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out four batters.
The Hawks will return to action on Sunday April 29th when they host the Fredonia Blue Devils at 12 noon.
