Hawks Split with Blue Devils
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team hosted Fredonia in a twinbill this afternoon and split with the Blue Devils. The Hawks claimed the first game 8-3, before dropping the nightcap 9-4.
New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the first before Fredonia tallied two runs in the second. The Hawks regained the lead in the third with an Alex Cadmus RBI single, followed by another run off a Fredonia error. New Paltz added to their lead with three runs in the fourth and single tallies in the sixth and eighth innings.
Cadmus and DeKams each went two of four from the plate with two RBI. Javier Lopez tallied three hits and Justin Buonamano recored two hits. Zachary Potter allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out six batters in a complete game.
In the second game, New Paltz started off with a DeKams RBI in the first for the early 1-0 lead. Fredonia responded with three runs in the top of the second. The Hawks evened the game in the bottom of the inning on a Robert Helf RBI double and a Lopez sacrifice fly. New Paltz took the lead in the third on a DeKams single to center field. The Hawks kept the lead until the sixth inning when Fredonia tallied three runs and scored three more runs to finish the scoring in the seventh.
DeKams and George Perry finished with two hits each. Jim Donohue allowed seven runs on six hits, walking four and striking out five batters in in 6.1 innings. Tristan Adams came in for relief, allowing two runs on four hits.
New Paltz stands at 11-13 on the season and 3-3 in SUNYAC play. The Hawks will return to action on Wednesday when they host Brockport in a SUNYAC doubleheader at 12pm.
