Softball Falls to Bowdoin and Defeats WNEC
CAPE CORAL, FL — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks softball team continued play in Cape Coral, FL today with a morning matchup against Bowdoin. The Hawks lost 8-1 with the only run coming in the sixth inning. Christina Charvat singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. First year Dale Cornelius reached second on an error by the left fielder, which sent Charvat home.
Bowdoin took the scoreboard first with run in the second, followed by three in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Polar Bears collected 10 hits, while the Hawks hit four.
Charvat led the offense going one of two from the plate. Amalia DiTrapani, Melyssa Cilmi and Joelle Von Bischoffhausen each hit one of three.
Junior Michelle Reinke took the loss on the mound, allowing ten hits, eight runs, four walks and one strikeout.
In the second game, the Hawks faced Western New England College (WNEC) and won 8-1. It is the first win for first year coach, Kristina Katori. DiTrapani led the offense going three of four from the plate with three RBI. Cilmi went one for four with three RBI and Von Bischoffhausen hit two of four with an RBI. First year Dale Cornelius hit one of three with an RBI and called a great game from the catcher position.
New Paltz took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third before WNEC collected a homerun in the top of the fourth. But the Hawks powered through the fourth collecting five runs.
Junior Kelly O’Hea threw a complete game on the mound, allowing seven hits, zero walks and four strikeouts.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they face Lasell and Bethel and 3 and 5 p.m.
