Softball Drops First Two Games of Season
CAPE CORAL, FL — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks faced Worcester in Cape Coral, FL this afternoon and lost a tough 2-1 decision. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Joelle Von Bischoffhausen singled, hitting home Amalia DiTrapani from second base and advancing Amy O’Brien to third. Worcester State scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI double, which would prove to be the game winning runs.
New Paltz had 6 hits compared to Worcesters three hits, however the Hawks left 10 runners on base. Von Bischoffhausen went 1-2 from the plate with an RBI. Cornelius hit two of three. Junior Michelle Reinke took the loss on the mound for the Hawks, throwing a complete six innings. She allowed three hits with eight strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz faced Bethel in their second game of the day and lost 10-6. Bethel took a 1-0 lead in the second before the Hawks came back to score two runs in the top of the third. Gina Marano singled to left field and then advanced to second on the throw. First year Victoria Kyle singled advancing Marano to third. Marano scored on a wild pitch before Christina Charvat singled and batted in Kyle.
Bethel regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth.
New Paltz scored twice in the fifth on a Dale Cornelius double that brought home junior Lauren Motzkin and Melyssa Cilmi. Bethel scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-4 lead before New Paltz scored two more runs in the seventh to finish the game.
Kyle went two of five from the plate, and Charvat hit two for two with an RBI. Cornelius went one for four with two RBI and Marano went two for three from the designated hitting position. Junior Kelly O’Hea took the loss on the mound allowing 14 hits, 10 runs with three strikeouts.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday morning when they face Bowdoin at 9 a.m and Western New England State at 11 a.m.
