Knights Sweep Hawks

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team hosted Geneseo in their SUNYAC opener and were swept by the Knights, 7-6 and 8-0. In the first game, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Amalia DiTrapani doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Melyssa Cilmi. DiTrapani scored on a wild pitch. The Knights took a 3-1 lead in the third when Kristen Newton hit a three run triple. The Hawks responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Erin Fitzpatrick reached on an error and advanced to second. Lauren Motzkin reached on an error. DiTrapani doubled to center field to score Fitzpatrick and Motzkin. The Knights tallied one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the fifth the Hawks rallied for three runs. Christina Charvat singled and advanced to second on a Motzkin single up the middle. Both runners advanced on a base on a wild pitch and then scored on a Daile Cornelius triple down the right field line. DiTrapani singled to center field to score Cornelius but that’s as close as the Hawks would come as the Knights held them the rest of the game.
DiTrapani went three for four from the plate with three RBI and Cilmi hit two of three. Junior Kelly O’Hea took the loss on the mound, allowing five hits, four runs, five walks and striking out two in four innings. Michelle Reinke pitched relief and allowed five hits, three runs, and one walk on three innings.

In the nightcap, the Hawks were shutout 8-0 in six innings. The Knights tallied three runs in the third, one in the fifth and four in the sixth. New Paltz received hits from Fitzpatrick, Cornelius, DiTrapani and Joelle VonBischoffhausen. Reinke took the loss on the mound, allowing six hits, eight runs, and six walks.

The Hawks fall to 4-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. New Paltz returns to action Saturday afternoon when they host the Brockport Golden Eagles at 1p.m.
