Hawks Split on First Day in Florida
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team traveled to Flordia for their spring break training and split with Wisconsin-Superior and Carelton State in their first day of games.
In the first game of the day the Hawks defeated Wisconsin-Superior 6-0. The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the first and added two more runs in the second inning. John DeKams went three of four from the plate with three RBI and Javier Lopez hit three of five. Kevin Paino added a run and a RBI for the Hawks going two of three from the plate. Jimmy Donohue tallied the win on the mound, pitching six innings with three hits and six strikeouts.
In the second game, the Hawks fell short to Carelton State, 6-5. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second on a run by Steven Ferguson. DeKams scored an unearned run in the fourth for the 2-1 lead. In the fifth the Hawks took a 4-2 lead with a run by George Perry and DeKams hit Paino home. Carelton came on strong in the sixth inning scoring four runs for the 6-4 lead, before New Paltz would tally their final run in the eighth, coming up short. DeKams finished with two hits, one run and an RBI. Perry hit two-for-three and Zach Potter took the loss on the mound. Potter threw a complete eight inning game, allowing nine hits, six runs, and three strikeouts.
The Hawks will face Western Connecticut State Monday morning at 10:00 a.m.
