Hawks Rally From 2-1 Deficit for 3-2 Win

JERSEY CITY, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team traveled to Jersey City tonight to face New Jersey City University (NJCU). The Hawks defeated the Gothic Knights 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 28-30, 30-24, 15-12). With the win the Hawks advance to 19-6 on the season.

NJCU burst ahead 2-games-to-1, and led game four 20-15, but #13 ranked SUNY-New Paltz used a 14-2 run to even the match, and held off the Gothic Knights in five games, for the 3-2 victory.

New Paltz senior middle hitter Josh Spiro (Island Park, NY/West Hempstead) led the Hawks with 18 kills (18-4-33) to hit .424, and added two aces and two blocks. Freshman middle hitter Christopher Holden (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) landed 17 kills (17-5-30) for a .400 percentage, and had four block assists, while senior outside hitter Jeff Lee (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) collected 17 kills (17-8-43, .256) and two aces.

Sophomore setter Matthew Weingarten (East Moriches/Eastport South Manor) finished with 60 assists, four blocks and two aces. Sophomore outside hitter Ryan Huberty (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) hit .500 with seven kills (7-0-14).

New Paltz returns to action on Thursday when they host New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
