SUNY New Paltz Baseball Drops Pair at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY — The Hawks totaled only ten hits and two runs in a doubleheader against conference rival Brockport, this afternoon. SUNY New Paltz lost the first game 6-0, before dropping the second 10-2.

Sophomore pitcher Rob Maxwell (Amherst, NY) allowed only one hit in seven innings of work, as he struck out five and walked one to earn his second win of the season. Only five Hawks reached base, senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) recorded two of the team’s four hits. Junior utility George Perry (Port Jervis, NY) and freshman second baseman Tyler Antrim (East Haddam, CT) collected the other two hits for SUNY New Paltz (13-15, 1-7). Junior pitcher Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) took his first lost of 2006 allowing three earned runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out three in five innings.

Sophomore outfielder Jeff Stith (Selden, NY) hit the first home run of his collegiate career to put the Hawks on the board in the fourth inning of game two. SUNY New Paltz, however, was already down 9-0 after giving up eight runs in the bottom of the third to the Golden Eagles. Senior outfielder Jim Debay (Rochester, NY) hit a grand slam off sophomore pitcher Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY) to help Brockport (11-11, 4-4) score eight runs in the third, five unearned, en route to the 10-2 victory.

Stith singled in his second at-bat and later scored on a throwing error to record the Hawks’ second run in the seventh inning. Kelts, senior outfielder Ryan Schafer (Oceanside, NY), sophomore outfielder Jason Solotaroff (Wappingers Falls, NY) and senior shortstop Jeff Sosis (New Rochelle, NY) each collected a hit for the Hawks.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will travel to the City College of New York for a game on Tuesday, April 11 at 3:30 pm.
