Softball Splits With Fredonia to Grab First SUNYAC Win of 2006

FREDONIA, NY — The Hawks put a seven-game losing streak to rest as they earned their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win of 2006, splitting today’s doubleheader against Fredonia. SUNY New Paltz took the opener 8-4 from the Blue Devils only to fall 6-0 in game two.

A seven-run fifth inning propelled the Hawks to an 8-4 defeat of Fredonia (7-13, 3-5) in this afternoon’s opener. After a bases loaded, RBI single from sophomore outfielder Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY), freshman Gina Morano (Shirley, NY) doubled to knock in three runs. Senior second baseman Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NY) followed with a RBI single and junior outfielder Amy O’Brien (LaGrangeville, NY) added a RBI double to power SUNY New Paltz to seven runs on six hits in the fifth. Morano went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI to lead the Hawks. O’Brien and junior catcher Margaret Blair (Lake Peekskill, NY) joined Morano with two hits apiece in the contest. Sophomore pitcher Michelle Reinke (St. James, NY) earned her fifth win of the year to even her record at 5-5. Reinke allowed four runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out six over seven innings.

O’Brien recorded two hits in the tail end of today’s doubleheader. Motzkin was the only other Hawk to pick up a hit in the contest, as junior pitcher Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk, NY) three-hit the Hawks. Sophomore pitcher Kelly O’Hea (Huntington Station, NY) allowed five earned runs over seven innings of work, as she walked two and struck out one in the losing effort.
