Softball Sinks Bloodhounds in Doubleheader

NEW PALTZ, NY — The Hawks scored 37 runs in two games to defeat John Jay College in both ends of a doubleheader. SUNY New Paltz posted a 21-run third inning in the opener on their way to a 24-1 victory. A ten-run first inning in game two helped the Hawks to a 13-1 victory, improving their overall record to 9-13.

Freshman pitcher Soely Sanchez (Bronx, NY) walked 15 batters in the third inning, as SUNY New Paltz (9-13) scored 21 runs on five hits to take a 21-1 lead. Sophomore pitcher Michelle Reinke (St. James, NY) threw her second consecutive one-hitter to pick up her seventh win of 2006. In five innings of work, Reinke allowed one run, walking three and striking out five.

Junior catcher Margaret Blair (Lake Peekskill, NY) went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI to lead the Hawks. Senior second baseman Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) went 2-for-2, scoring twice and knocking in two runs. Three other Hawks collected two RBI in the contest; sophomore outfielders Joelle VonBischoffshausen (North Brunswick, NJ) and Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY), and junior outfielder Amy O’Brien (LaGrangeville, NY).

SUNY New Paltz scored ten runs on six hits in the first inning of game two to grab an early advantage over John Jay College (2-24). Blair was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. In her second at-bat of the first inning, Blair tripled to clear the bases. O’Brien also totaled three hits for the Hawks, knocking in two runs on three singles. Motzkin, Wong, senior first baseman Liz McPartlan (Huntington Station, NY) and sophomore shortstop Amalia Ditrapani (Staten Island, NY) recorded the other hits for SUNY New Paltz.

Sophomore pitcher Kelly O’Hea (Huntington Station, NY) earned her second win, allowing one run on three hits in game two. She walked one and struck out three in five innings of work.

The SUNY New Paltz softball team will look to extend their four-game winning streak as they host Purchase in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 13 at 3:00 pm.
