Softball Ends Season With Sweep of Lady Bears

NEW PALTZ, NY — The Hawks blanked St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) in both games of this afternoon’s doubleheader, surpassing their win total from a season ago, 17. Defeating the Lady Bears 8-0, and 8-0, the SUNY New Paltz softball team closed out their year at 18-20.

Sophomore pitcher Michelle Reinke (St. James, NY) finished the year at 12-8, picking up the win in the opener. Reinke allowed one hit while striking out three in five innings of work. The Hawks held a 2-0 advantage through the first three innings before plating six runs in the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to help SUNY New Paltz (18-20) to the 8-0 victory. Junior outfielder Amy O’Brien (LaGrangeville, NY) and senior third baseman Danielle Porcelli (Huntington Station, NY) each recorded two hits. O’Brien closes out the year with a team-high batting average of .336.

St. Joseph’s (16-13) lone hit came off the bat of junior shortstop Carol Jeanne Kavanagh (Queens, NY), who led off the fifth inning with a single. Senior pitcher Kristin Healy (Queens, NY) picked up the loss for St. Joseph’s.

In the second game, the Hawks scored seven runs in the first three innings en route to the 8-0 win. Sophomore pitcher Kelly O’Hea (Huntington Station, NY) threw five innings, allowing three hits, while striking out five to pick up her sixth win of the season. Porcelli recorded the Hawks’ only hit, as sophomore pitcher Ryan Vasquez (Margaretville, NY) gave up 11 walks and two earned runs in the contest for the Lady Bears. Motzkin totaled two RBI in the affair.

Senior first baseman Liz McPartlan (Huntington Station, NY), senior second baseman Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) and senior third baseman Danielle Porcelli (Huntington Station, NY) played in the final games of their collegiate careers.
