Hawks Complete Sweep of Brewers With 10-3 Win
NEW PALTZ, NY — The Hawks topped Vassar College 10-3, this afternoon, to sweep the Brewers on the year. SUNY New Paltz beat Vassar College 9-4 on April 5 in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Vassar College (6-20) scored twice in the top of the first to grab the initial edge on the Hawks. SUNY New Paltz scored once in the bottom of the inning and twice in the second, including a solo shot from senior first baseman Matt Zajdel (Agawam, MA), to take a 3-1 lead.
Senior outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) homered in the sixth to spark the Hawks to a four-run inning. SUNY New Paltz scored twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to capture the 10-3 victory.
Senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) collected four hits in five at-bats, while scoring twice and knocking in two to lead SUNY New Paltz (16-17), offensively. Cote’ and junior third baseman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) each totaled three hits, Cote’ scored four times in the contest. Senior designated hitter Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) and junior outfielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) recorded two hits and a run scored, apiece, as sophomore catcher Robert Helf (Peconic, NY) went 1-for-4 with a RBI.
Sophomore outfielder Mike Murn (Huntington, NY) collected three hits and three RBI for the Brewers. Sophomore pitcher Alex Tanskey (Bedford, NY) picked up the loss.
Sophomore pitcher Mike Virga (Farmingville, NY) picked up his first win of the season for SUNY New Paltz. Virga worked three innings of scoreless relief, walking one and striking out three.
The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will host Oswego in a 12:00 pm conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 22.
