Hawks 10 Game Winning Streak Snapped By #19 Plattsburgh

SCHENECTADY, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team had their 10 game winning streak snapped by #19 ranked Plattsburgh this afternoon, losing 2-0 and 8-0. Plattsburgh is currently ranked 19th by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association NCAA Division III Top 25 poll. The Hawks fall to 15-15 on the year and 5-9 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as Plattsburgh advances to 23-7 overall and 11-1 in conference play.

In the opener, sophomore shortstop Amalia Ditrapani (Staten Island, NY) laced a single to left field, in the sixth, to break up the Plattsburgh no hitter. The Cardinals scored one run in the fourth when freshman designated hitter Shannon Connors (Brockport, NY) launched a solo homer over the fence in left center to put Plattsburgh up 1-0. The Cardinals scored again in the fifth when freshman outfielder Ashley Shannon (Baltimore, Canada) ripped an RBI single scoring sophomore first baseman Andrea Stupp (Bethlehem, NY).

Sophomore pitcher Kelly O’Hea (Huntington Station, NY) threw seven innings for the Hawks allowing nine hits, striking out three, and giving up two runs in the loss. Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Zweig (West Nyack, NY) threw a one-hitter, fanning 16 of the 23 Hawks faced.

SUNY New Paltz fell behind early in the second game, as Plattsburgh platted two runs in the first inning and five more in the third. Sophomore second baseman Annie Riccio (Valley Stream, NY) drove an RBI single to left field to end the game, 8-0 in the fifth. Shannon, Connors, and senior outfielder Jamie Purdhomme (Cohoes, NY) all went two-for-three, with 2 RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Michelle Reinke (St. James, NY) allowed eleven hits in the second contest. In four and two thirds innings she struck out three, walked one, and allowed seven earned runs. Senior first baseman Liz McPartlan (Huntington Station, NY) had the only hit for the Hawks.

The SUNY New Paltz softball team will host Cortland in a 3:00 pm SUNYAC doubleheader on Friday, April 21.
