Baseball Splits With SUNY IT, Earns 15th Win of 2006
NEW PALTZ, NY — The Hawks topped their win total from a season ago, 14, taking the first game of this afternoon’s doubleheader with SUNY IT, 9-2, to earn their 15th win of 2006. SUNY New Paltz fell to the Wildcats 10-1 in the second game.
SUNY New Paltz (15-17, 2-8) scored six runs in the sixth to take the lead in the opener, 7-2. Senior first baseman Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) recorded a RBI single in the inning, as did junior shortstop Daniel Garcia (Patterson, NY), sophomore catcher Robert Helf (Peconic, NY), and senior designated hitter Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY). Gutes and senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) added run-scoring singles in the eighth to help the Hawks to the 9-2 victory. Helf went 3-for-3 at the plate with the first homer of his career to lead the SUNY New Paltz offense. Senior outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD), Gutes, Kelts and junior third baseman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) each recorded two hits. Sophomore pitcher Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY) earned his fourth win of the season working eight innings. Donohue gave up one earned run on ten hits, while walking one and striking out eight. Junior pitcher Dean Williams (Norwich, NY) picked up the loss for SUNY IT (8-15, 1-9).
Senior pitcher Travis Steffens (Port Jervis, NY) worked a perfect game, until Gutes ripped a triple in the bottom seventh, and then scored on the misplayed relay. Gutes’ triple was the only hit for the Hawks in the second game. Junior pitcher Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) got the start for SUNY New Paltz and fell to 2-2 on the year with the loss.
Freshman catcher Vinny Brescia (Utica, NY) led the Wildcats with four hits and three RBI in game two. Three other SUNY IT players collected multiple hits, as the Wildcats totaled 13 in the game, to score 10 runs.
The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will compete against local rival Vassar College on Wednesday, April 19 in a 3:30 pm home contest.
