Stith, Donohue Six-Hit Purchase in Doubleheader

PURCHASE, NY — The SUNY New Paltz starting pitchers allowed only six hits in today’s doubleheader against Purchase College. The Hawks posted 14-0 and 13-0 victories against the Panthers behind superb pitching from sophomores Jeff Stith (Selden, NY) and Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY). Stith improved his 2006 record to 3-0 in game one while allowing only two hits, as he struck out 11 in a complete game, scoreless effort. Donohue (2-1) pitched a complete game of his own in game two allowing four hits and striking out seven.

SUNY New Paltz (10-7) jumped on Purchase College (1-9) early in game one, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Junior third baseman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) was one of three Hawks to total three hits in the contest. DeKams ripped a two RBI single in the first inning to give SUNY New Paltz the early advantage. Seniors, outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) and catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) each recorded second inning singles to extend the Hawks’ lead to five. DeKams went 3-for-4 with two doubles as he scored twice and knocked in three. Cote’ went 3-for-3 with a double. He scored three times and totaled two RBI. Junior shortstop Daniel Garcia (Patterson, NY) was also 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) collected two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth. Senior first baseman Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) and junior outfielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) recorded two hits and two RBI, respectively.

Cote’ and DeKams led the Hawks’ potent offense to similar results in game two. Cote’ tagged a two-run single and DeKams followed with a RBI double to help SUNY New Paltz (11-7) to a four-run third inning. The Hawks scored eight more runs over the next three innings to bury Purchase College (1-10) under another double-digit offensive production. Kelts and senior catcher Eric Velazquez (Chestnut Ridge, NY) joined Cote’ and DeKams with two hits in the affair. Kelts opened the scoring for the Hawks in the second with his fourth homerun of the year. Garcia added a two-run single in the fourth and Gutes provided a RBI double in the fifth.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will host Ithaca College in their home opener on Wednesday, March 29 scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
