Masterson Finishes NCAA 50-Yard Freestyle Preliminary in 4th

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The 2006 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Swimming and Diving Championships began with the first round of preliminary heats this afternoon at the University of Minnesota. Senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) is the only SUNY New Paltz swimmer participating in this year’s championship meet, swimming in the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard freestyle events.

Masterson competed in the 50-yard freestyle preliminary heat this afternoon and swam to a fourth place finish with a time of 24.04. The finals for this afternoon’s preliminary heats will begin at 6:30 pm (central time). The final for the 50-yard freestyle is scheduled for an approximate 7:30 pm start. Preliminary and final heats for the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle will take place on Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11, respectively.

In last year’s NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships Masterson swam preliminary heats in the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, but failed qualify for finals competition.
