Five Hawks Swimmers Land Spot On SUNYAC All-Conference Teams

FREDONIA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swim teams completed the State University Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Meet with five swimmers receiving All-Conference accolades.

For their outstanding performances throughout the 2005-2006 season, senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) earned first team selection, while sophomore Regina Davide (Ossining, NY), junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY), and freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY) garnered second team selections. On the men?s team, sophomore John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) was named second team all-conference. For Davide, Hopf, and Felckenstein this marks the first time in their respective careers that they have received an all-conference team selection. Masterson has earned all-conference team selections for three consecutive years, while Rapp receives all-conference for the second time.

At the 2005 SUNYAC Championship, Masterson collected four SUNYAC Championships en route to earning Most Valuable Female Swimmer Honors and garnering the Grace Mowatt Award. SUNY New Paltz received conference championships in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay from the performance of Masterson.

Davide swam to a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.33, as well as placing third in the 200-yard freestyle with time of 1:40.20. Rapp was part of the relay team, which captured a conference championship in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:51.15 and helped the Hawks place third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:03.97. She also took second place in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.25. Hopf received second place in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing in a time of 2:31.48. She also swam in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 500-yard freestyle, and was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team, which finished fourth with a time of 3:42.24. Fleckenstein finished third in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:16.28 and was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team, the 400-yard freestyle relay team, and the 400-yard medley relay. He also swam the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley, earning the Hawks a wealth of team points for all of his events.

The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams will compete next at the ECAC Open Championships, scheduled for February 24-26, at the University of Pittsburgh.
