SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Swept At Cortland
CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swim teams were both defeated by conference rival Cortland this afternoon. For the women, the 116-89 defeat was only their second duel meet loss in the last three years. Their record now stands at 5-2. The men lost by a score of 125-78 and fall to 3-4 on the year.
Freshman Chad Santa Maria (Rexford, NY) captured all of the men’s first place finishes. Santa Maria touched in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles with times of 5:08.30 and 10:41.70, respectively. Later, Santa Maria combined with sophomore John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY), freshman Chris Smith (Suffern, NY), and Sophomore Brendan Lown (Bohemia, NY) for a second place effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:27.90).
Freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY) swam to a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:29.95. Senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY), freshman Beth Colebeck (Rochester, NY), junior Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) and junior Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) combined to collect the Hawks other first place finish with a time of 4:14.51 in the 400-yard medley relay. The same cast joined later for a second place swim in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:48.74).
The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams return to action on February 9, 2006 when they compete in the State University of New York Athleic Conference Championship.
