SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Team Falls to NJIT

NEWARK, NJ — This evening, the SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team suffered their first loss of the 2006 season to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 3-0.

SUNY New Paltz (2-1) got off to an early lead, but NJIT battled back to secure the first game, 30-24. The Highlanders went on to take games two and three 30-15. Freshman setter Matt Weingarten (East Moriches, NY) led the attack for the Hawks with 17 assists and five digs. Senior opposite Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY) tallied 11 kills in the affair. Junior outside hitter Jeff Lee (Clifton Park, NY) paced the defensive effort of SUNY New Paltz with eight digs in the loss.

NJIT (3-1) received a dominant performance from sophomore outside hitter Eduardo Welter (Camboriu, Brazil) who recorded seven aces, 10 kills, and eight digs. Sophomore opposite Leonardo Paludo (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) contributed 10 digs. Freshman setter Rodrigo Correa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 24 assists, playing in two games, while sophomore setter Michael Nonneman (Warminster, PA) played the third game for NJIT and recorded 13 assists.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team will open up their conference schedule tomorrow, January 28 at 4:00 pm when they travel to Mount Saint Vincent College.
