SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Earns Second Straight Win

NEW YORK, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team captured their second consecutive win to open up the 2006 season. SUNY New Paltz and Baruch split the first four games, before the Hawks took the final game 15-11, for the 3-2 victory.

SUNY New Paltz (2-0) opened up the evening with a 30-22 win in the first game. Baruch (3-2) recovered to win the second game 30-26. The Hawks won game three 30-20 and the Bearcats captured the fourth 30-28. In the final game, SUNY New Paltz posted a .800 hitting percentage to seize the 15-11 win and seal the 3-2 victory.

The Hawks had four players finish with double figures in kills and one collect an all-time, program record for digs in a game. Sophomore libero Pedro Medina (Brentwood, NY) totaled an all-time, program-high, with 27 digs on the evening. Juniors, outside hitter Jeff Lee (Clifton Park, NY) and middle blocker Josh Spiro (Island Park, NY) recorded 11 kills apiece. Lee added 15 digs, while Spiro made 19 blocks. Senior outside hitter Jamie Kellogg (Scio, NY) collected 11 kills and 14 digs as senior opposite Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY) led the Hawks with 17 kills. The kill totals for Lee and Kellogg were also career-highs. Freshman setter Matt Weingarten (East Moriches, NY) provided 42 assists over the five games.

Junior outside hitter Greg Waldvogel (West Hempstead, NY) led the Bearcats with 21 kills and nine digs. Senior setter King Cheng (Great Neck, NY) piloted the Baruch offense with 47 assists, while sophomore middle blocker Steve Rouse (New York, NY) and senior outside hitter William Miranda (Long Island City, NY) recorded 11 kills and 16 digs, respectively.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team will travel to the New Jersey Institute of Technology for a 7:00 pm match on Friday, January 27.
