SUNY New Paltz Men’s Basketball Drop SUNYAC Contest at Elting
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball team dropped this evening’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game to Brockport by a final of 97-79.
SUNY New Paltz (4-14, 1-9) kept the Golden Eagles within range entering halftime down 49-44. The Golden Eagles were provided with 18 points from junior forward Jon Rother (Sodus Point, NY) in the opening half. Senior forward Kenny Amparo (Yonkers, NY) added 10 points in the first half. The Hawks received 15 points from junior forward John Hauser (East Williston, NY), while sophomore guard Jimmy Sugrue (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) pitched in 12, first half, points on four-of-four shooting from behind the three-point line.
Brockport (9-8, 5-3) opened up the second half with a 19-6 run extending their five-point halftime lead to a 16-point edge, 68-52. The Hawks whittled the Golden Eagles’ lead to eight, with 6:42 remaining in the game; off a three-point field goal from freshman forward Luke Robinson (Brooklyn, NY). Brockport, however, maintained control of the affair and picked up the 97-79 victory. Hauser finished with a team-high, 24 points. Junior guard Matt Irwin (Brooklyn, NY) collected ten points, seven assists, and six rebounds, as Sugrue finished the contest with a career-high 18 points, shooting six-of-seven from behind the arch, and eight assists.
Rother led all scores with 30 points, on 11-of-15 shooting. Four other Golden Eagles joined him in double figures. Amparo finished with 15 points, while senior guard Jerry Cheves (Brockport, NY) and junior guard Dan Rubertone (Smithtown, NY) recorded 14 points and ten points, respectively. Senior guard Ben Bellucci (Cicero, NY) provided Brockport with a double-double, recording 23 points and 10 rebounds. Bellucci collected eight assists on the evening for the Golden Eagles.
The SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball team will host Fredonia tomorrow, Saturday, January 28 in an 8:00pm SUNYAC competition.
