SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Falls to Local Rival

NEWBURGH, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team fell to local rival Mount Saint Mary College this evening 48-63. The Hawks drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Knights advance to 3-0.

Despite shooting 44% from the field, SUNY New Paltz found themselves down by two points at the half, 28-26. Senior guard Stacey Schultz (Valley Stream, NY) ignited the offense for the Knights with 19 points and three rebounds. Junior center LaSheena Brown (Malverne, NY) collected 15 points and seven boards, while sophomore guard Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, NY) netted 14 points and 5 assists on the night.

The Hawks played stellar defense snatching a total of 46 rebounds, 28 defensively. Sophomore guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) led the Hawks with twelve points and six rebounds. Senior center Alexandria Cruse (Poughkeepsie, NY) spent her 23 minutes on the court cleaning up the boards totaling 18 rebounds. Senior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) finished the night with 11 points.

Mount Saint Mary College increased their lead, out scoring the Hawks 35-22 in the second half to solidify the 63-48 win.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will return to action on November 29, at 6:00 pm when they will host conference rival Oneonta.
