SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Team Falls Short in Overtime
SCHENECTADY, NY — This afternoon, the SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team lost their second game in as many days, 1-0, at the Union Classic Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Hawks battled Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) through a scoreless regulation only to fall with 24 seconds remaining in overtime.
SUNY New Paltz (3-3) had a chance late in overtime when junior forward Greg Foss (Queensbury, NY) found himself on the doorstep, but could not execute. Sophomore goalkeeper John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY) was able to smother the Hawk’s opportunity before Foss was able to break the tie.
RPI (4-1-0) quickly retaliated off the Thibdeau save. Sophomore midfielder Gary Sroka (Liverpool, NY) led the Engineers down the field and scored the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining to play. Thibdeau recorded five saves and the shutout.
Junior forward Joe Fabian (Selden, NY) led SUNY New Paltz with six shots, two on goal, in the losing effort.
Next weekend, September 16 and 17, the SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team will go on the road to open their conference schedule at Fredonia and Buffalo State.
