SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Takes Loss in Home Opener
KINGSTON, NY — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team lost their home opener this afternoon, 2-1, to Hartwick College. With 3:40 remaining, junior forward Jenev Schilling (Vineyard Haven, MA) found sophomore midfielder Meg Hughes (Holland Patent, NY) in front of the net to put home the game-winner.
The Hawks were down 1-0 at halftime, but only six minutes into the second-half junior forward Shannon Stokes (Accord, NY) broke free and buried a shot to the back of the cage to tie the affair, 1-1. Junior forward Kelly Proper (Red Hook, NY) led SUNY New Paltz (0-2) with three shots.
Hartwick College (1-0) controlled much of the play early with seven penalty corners in the first-half. They tallied their first goal with 6:17 remaining in the opening half. Sophomore midfielder Caroline Uhran (Morristown, NJ) received a pass from junior midfielder Jenny Knight (Oak Bluffs, MA) and put it past junior goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) to give Hartwick College a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Kovac registered ten saves in the loss. Junior goalkeeper Ashley King (Barnstable, MA) collected four saves for Hartwick College.
