SUNY New Paltz Softball Team Drops Two at Oswego
OSWEGO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to conference rival Oswego this afternoon. The Hawks dropped the first game, 3-2, and could not recover in the second game, losing 6-1.
The Lakers (14-12, 8-6) scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Senior Julie Barlow (Canastota, NY) and junior catcher Missy Constanza (Hannibal, NY) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After a fielder?s choice and an error at third, Oswego was able to load the bases. Pinch runner, Rachel Eckhard (Hannibal, NY) crossed the plate, unearned, on a fielder?s choice by freshman Jillian Burns (Wynantskill, NY) and senior pitcher Heather McBride (Mechanicville, NY) helped her own cause with an RBI single to put the Lakers ahead 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, freshman shortstop Amalia Ditrapani (Staten Island, NY) singled in senior Jen Born (Walworth, NY), with two down, to bring SUNY New Paltz (16-14, 6-10) with in a run. McBride got junior Liz McPartlan (Huntington Station, NY) to ground out to short to end the inning and preserve the win.
Freshman Emily Nyman (Islip, NY) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Ditrapani was 1-for-3 with a run batted in for the Hawks. Freshman pitcher Michelle Reinke threw six innings and allowed six hits, three runs, no earned runs, walked two and struck out six in the losing effort. She falls to 8-8 on the year. McBride improves to 6-6 for the Lakers.
Oswego grabbed the lead in the second game with six unearned runs in the fourth inning. SUNY New Paltz was able to steal one back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single from freshman catcher Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY), but the Laker defense was able to hold on for the 6-1 victory.
McPartlan went 2-for-3 with a run. Freshman pitcher Kelly O’Hea (Huntington Station, NY) pitched all seven innings and allowed 12 hits, six runs, no earned runs, no walks and struck out three in the loss. O?Hea falls to 8-6 on the year.
Sophomore Carolyn Agle (Eden, NY) went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and Constanza was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI for Oswego. Junior Susie Burt (Cuba, NY) picked up the win (5-3).
