Hawks Route Castleton State
NEW PALTZ, NY — Sophomore forward Amseshem Foluke-Henderson (Jamaica, NY) had 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball team to an 85-64 non-conference win over Castleton State this evening.
The Hawks (9-11) used a 14-7 run in the final six minutes of the first half to extend a 30-26 lead to 44-33 at the intermission. Junior guard Jon Carter (Mount Vernon, NY) and freshman guard Victor Alvarez (Far Rockaway, NY) each sank three-point field goals during the run as SUNY New Paltz began to pull away from the Spartans.
The Hawks’ strong first half finish continued into the opening minutes of the second half as Foluke-Henderson scored the first four points of the second half to give SUNY New Paltz a 48-33 lead 50 seconds into the half. Minutes later, Carter sank back-to-back three-pointers to give the Hawks a 61-42 lead at the 15-minute mark and the SUNY New Paltz lead would balloon to 26 with 11 minutes remaining.
Carter finished with a career-high 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range. As a team, the Hawks sank nine three-point field goals in the game.
Sophomore guard John Hauser (East Williston, NY) led all scorers with 19 points. He also had eight rebounds and four assists. In all, the Hawks had five players in double figures this evening. Junior guard Maurice Douglas (Brooklyn, NY) finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and sophomore guard Tony Cannon (New York, NY) added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Castleton State (9-13) was led by senior guard Ray Daley (Brooklyn, NY) who finished with 16 points.
