SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Split with Geneseo

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams split victories with conference rival Geneseo this afternoon. In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, SUNY New Paltz secured their end of the split, when sophomore Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY), sophomore Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY), freshman Laura Lipp (Smithtown, NY), and sophomore Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) swam to a first place finish with a time of 3:51.79. The women defeated the Geneseo Blue Wave 110-95 and remain unbeaten at 5-0. The men fell to the Blue Wave 109-84 and drop to 2-3 on the year.

The SUNY New Paltz women started out on the right foot with a first place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, senior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY), senior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY), sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) and junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) finished in 4:10.66.

Lindner, Delia and Masterson all placed first for the Hawks in other individual events. Lindner took first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.12) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.91), Delia finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.82) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.07) and Masterson gave the Hawks a first place effort in the 50-yard freestyle (24.83) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.21).

Geneseo senior Erin Walsh (Kenmore, NY) grabbed a two first place finishes for the Blue Wave, the first coming in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:58.02) and second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.17). Senior Jenny Cocco (Batavia, NY) grabbed a first place finish for Geneseo in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.22).

Senior Ben Yousey (Beaverfalls, NY) provided the SUNY New Paltz men with some strong finishes. Yousey placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.84) and joined senior Joe Davidson (Turnersville, NY), sophomore Danny Lo (Toms River, NY), and freshman John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) for a first place swim in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:36.78). Lo also swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.43).

Senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) provided the Hawks with a first place finish as well, winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.66.

Geneseo received two first place finishes from Mike Weise (Buffalo, NY). Weise finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.33) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.93). Sophomore James Kallio (Avon, NY) took first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:47.78) and joined sophomore Phillip Szrama (Orchard Park, NY), junior Josh Hinman (Weedsport, NY), and senior Dan Allen (Delmar, NY) for a first place swim in the 400-yard medley relay (3:37.30). Allen also grabbed a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.97).

The Blue Wave received first place finishes from juniors Tim Stockton (Fairport, NY) and Evan Smith (Pine Bush, NY) as well. Stockton placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (50.09) and Smith finished first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.41).

The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams will host Cortland in their final home meet of the season on January 29th at 1:00 p.m.
