Hawks Fall To First Place Brockport
NEW PALTZ, NY — Trailing 34-27 at the half, the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team managed just four, second half field goals and fell 60-44 to conference leading Brockport this afternoon.
The Hawks (9-8, 4-5) were 4-of-32 from the floor in the second half and went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal. Sophomore forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) sank a three-pointer with just under 12 minutes to play cut the Brockport lead to 40-36. The Hawks would not convert on another field goal attempt until the 2:25 mark when sophomore Kristen Jackson (East Islip, NY) hit a three-pointer. By that time Brockport had built a 55-37 lead thanks to the play of freshman guard Ashley Broadhurst (Saquoit, NY) who scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second half.
Brockport, winners of seven straight, took a 15-point first half lead behind the play of Kim Schlegel (Red Creek, NY) who was 5-of-5 from the field and scored 11 of Brockport’s 34 opening half points.
Schlegel’s jumper with 7:06 remaining in the half put the Golden Eagles in front 28-13. The Hawks then chipped away at the deficit and scored six consecutive points to make it 31-24 with three minutes left in the half. Freshman forward Christine Trupiano (Massapequa, NY) helped keep the SUNY New Paltz deficit at seven with a short jumper as time expired in the first half.
Schlegel finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles who are now 9-7 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC.
Senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) led SUNY New Paltz with 11 rebounds and seven rebounds. Glazewski added 10 points and nine rebounds.
