Hawks Take League Opener From SUNY IT
NEW PALTZ, NY — Senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) sophomore forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY), and freshman forward Christine Trupiano (Massapequa, NY) all scored in double figures to lead the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team to a 59-41 win over SUNY IT in the league opener for both teams this evening at Elting Gym.
Leading 27-25 at the half, the Hawks (2-2, 1-0) dug in on the defensive end holding the Wildcats to three field goals and seven points in the first 13 minutes of the second half. SUNY New Paltz took command when Glazewski sank a three-pointer with seven minutes to play to put the Hawks ahead 45-32. Glazewski scored nine of her 13 points in the second half to help key SUNY New Paltz to the victory.
Weigel, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, established herself early with seven points in the first two and a half minutes to help the Hawks jump out to an early 10-2 lead. Trupiano then came off the bench and scored eight points to help the Hawks build an 18-11 advantage with 8:40 left in the half. Trupiano finished the game with 12 points and six rebounds.
SUNY IT, sparked by the play of sophomore guard Shannel Finch (Syracuse, NY) and junior forward Lizette Blackman (Naples, NY), scored 14 of the next 17 points to take a 25-21 lead with 3:58 remaining in the half. The Hawks then outscored the Wildcats 6-2 the rest of the way to take a two-point lead at the break.
Sophomore forward Kieran Burns (Staten Island, NY) led SUNY IT (1-2, 0-1) with 10 points and six rebounds. Finch and Blackman each had six points.
