Hawks Advance to Championship Bracket at Red Dragon Classic
CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team swept its two matches this evening to move into tomorrow’s championship bracket at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
The Hawks used 19 service aces and a .282 attack percentage to defeat Husson College, 30-14, 30-20, 30-18 in their opening match. Sophomore outside hitter Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY) had a team-high seven kills to lead a balanced offensive attack. Junior outside hitter Kelly Long (Endwell, NY) added five kills and hit .286 for the match.
Sophomore setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) had 18 assists and five service aces.
In their second match, the Hawks (2-1) registered a 30-22, 30-22, 30-21 victory over SUNYAC rival Fredonia. Junior middle hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) had 12 kills, seven blocks and hit .360 for the match. Junior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) finished eight kills, five digs and four blocks and sophomore right side Franchesca Rodriguez (Schenectady, NY) added six kills, four assists, three digs and two service aces.
SUNY New Paltz will play two more matches on Saturday. The Hawks will face Cortland at 11:00 a.m. and Nazareth at 1:00 p.m.
