SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Team Defeats Brooklyn, 98-38, in Tip-Off Tournament

NEWBURGH, NY — Sophomore Colleen Kelly (Hyde Park, NY) and freshman Kelley Germain (Albany, NY) each scored 19 points as the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team opened up the 2003-04 season with a 98-38 victory over Brooklyn College in the opening round of the Mount Saint Mary Tip-Off Tournament. The Hawks advanced to the championship game where they will play # 23 Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, November 22 at 4:00.

New Paltz stormed out to a 13-1 lead as Kelly scored seven points during the run. She would finish 7-9 from the field and 2-4 from three-point range along with three assists and two steals.

Brooklyn pulled to within eight points at 15-7 on a basket by Francesca Kennedy with 11:56 remaining in the half but they wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the game. New Paltz forced the Bridges into 28 first half turnovers and headed into the locker room with a 48-22 lead.

The Hawks continued to pour it on after halftime by scoring the first 18 points of the second half to take a 66-22 lead and cruised to the victory.

Senior Maura McShane (East Rockaway, NY) and sophomore Tania Liberato (Brentwood, NY) chipped in with 12 points apiece while the Hawks forced 49 Brooklyn turnovers and collected 39 steals.
