New Paltz Women’s Volleyball Team Drops One Match Playoff to Plattsburgh
CORTLAND, NY — In a one-match playoff to decide the sixth and final spot in this year’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women’s volleyball tournament, SUNY New Paltz fell 3-1 to Plattsburgh.
With the victory, the Cardinals (15-15) earned right to meet SUNYAC Eastern Division Champion Cortland this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. New Paltz finished the year with a 17-19 record and posted its highest win total since winning 21 matches in 1999.
Plattsburgh took control of the first game jumping out to a 21-11 lead and would eventually prevail 30-22. The Cardinals built a 21-14 lead in the second game before New Paltz climbed to within three at 23-30. From there Plattsburgh ended the Hawks rally and took the second game 30-25.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, New Paltz fought off elimination winning a tight third game 30-27. The Hawks held a 23-21 advantage in the fourth game before Plattsburgh pulled even at 28. The Cardinals then took the next two points to win the match and advance into the tournament.
Sophomore middle hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) had 17 kills and six blocks for the Hawks. Senior setter Jennifer Hollis (Livingston, NJ) closed out her collegiate career with 40 assists, eight digs, and four kills.
New Paltz had 26 errors in the match and hit .125 over the four games.
