Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Show Strong Effort at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men s and women s cross country teams opened the 2003 season at the Vassar Invitational this afternoon.

Senior John Zarella (Mahopac, NY) helped lead the men s squad to a second place finish among nine teams. Zarella came in second in the race with a time of 27:39 on the 8K-course. Senior Dan Holton (Rhinebeck, NY) was also among the top 10 finishers, coming in 10th with a time of 29:07. The Hawks had five more runners finish among the top 20. Freshman Matt McLean (Oswego, NY) made a strong debut finishing 12th with a time of 29:25. Junior Jason Letts (Plattsburgh, NY) was 14th with a time of 29:41 while freshman Mike Nelson (Dixhills, NY) came in 17th at 30:26. Freshmen Alex Adelewitz (Ithaca, NY) and Harry Sudwischer (Copiague, NY) were also among the top-20 finishers coming in 19th and 20th respectively with times of 30:36 and 30:37.

The women s squad finished third among the nine-team field with a total of 57 points. Sophomore Kate Choromanski (Shelton, CT) finished the 5K-course in 20:05 to earn the Hawks top spot and an eighth place finish overall. Sophomore Janet Walsh (Baldwinsville, NY) was 10th with a time of 20:14. Sophomore Heather DeBuono (Fishkill, NY) finished 14th with a time of 20:28 while Alida Van Alemelo (Groton, NY) was 16th with a time of 20:36 in her collegiate debut. Junior Kelly Moore (Rochester, NY) ran a personal best time of 21:26 to finish 25th.
