Hawks Split Baseball Doubleheader with SUNYIT

NEW PALTZ, NY – — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team opened conference play by spliting a doubleheader with SUNYIT this afternoon at Loren Campbell Field.

The Hawks squandered a 6-0 lead in game one only to win it in the bottom of the seventh when senior outfielder Tom Bigler (Brewster, NY) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and no one out scoring freshman outfielder Vin McAdams (Little Falls, NY) and giving New Paltz a 7-6 victory.

SUNYIT pushed home three runs in the sixth against senior Keith Roloson (Westtown, NY) who pitched five innings of no-hit ball before wearing down. Roloson, who did not figure in the decision, gave up three runs on two hits while walking five and striking out six in six innings of work.

The Wildcats scored three more times in the seventh against senior Chris Schuon (Lake Katrine, NY) who gave up three consecutive hits after retiring the first hitter he faced. Junior Alex Tate (New York, NY) relieved Schuon and surrendered a hit and the game-tying sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder Mark Lossi (Oneonta, NY).

McAdams was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI in the first game. Tate picked up the win for the Hawks. Lossi had a hit and two RBI for the Wildcats.

In game two, junior second baseman Mark Coates (Conklin, NY) and junior outfielder Jason Lansing (Trumansburg, NY) each homered and junior Matt Mosenthin surrendered one run in five innings of relief as SUNYIT prevailed 8-6.

Coates, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the second game, started a three-run fifth for the Wildcats with a game-tying homer over the left field wall. Senior outfielder Jason Longo (Utica, NY) singled home junior shortstop Rob Pedulla (Utica, NY) for what proved to be the game-winning run in that same inning.

Junior Rich Bizelia (Massapequa, NY) pitched into the fifth and allowed six runs on seven hits to drop to 0-3 on the year. McAdams homered for New Paltz and went 4-for-7 with three RBI in the doubleheader.

New Paltz left 14 men on base in the second game to drop to 5-12 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. SUNYIT is now 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.
