Hawks Come up Short at Brockport
BROCKPORT, NY – — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball gave first place Brockport all it could handle before falling 82-73 this afternoon.
The Hawks trailed 71-67 with 3:10 remaining before Brockport scored six straight points to push the margin to 10 with 1:40 remaining. Kristen Clark scored four of her game-high 30 points during that run to help the Golden Eagles improve to 13-3 overall and remain undefeated in the league (7-0).
New Paltz played Brockport tight throughout the second half but couldn’t manage to tie or take the lead. The Hawks pulled to within one on two occasions, the last coming on a layup by sophomore guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) with 14 minutes remaining.
Brockport on the other hand never pushed the margin beyond six until Clark led the Golden Eagles late surge with under three minutes remaining.
Senior forward Silver Williams (Newburgh, NY) had 24 points and 11 rebounds for New Paltz. Weigel and junior guard Maura McShane (East Rockaway, NY) each had 16 for New Paltz who dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in the SUNYAC.
Clark reached the 30-point mark on 14-of-14 shooting at the foul line. Brockport hit 22-of-25 at the line for the game. Meghan Squires also turned in a strong performance for the Golden Eagles and finished with 23 points and eight rebounds.
New Paltz used a 14-2 first half run to overcome an eight- deficit to go ahead 27-23 at the five-minute mark. Brockport pulled even with four straight points and the two teams traded baskets the rest of the way to go into the lockeroom tied at 34.
