Hawks Fall to Conference Rival Geneseo
NEW PALTZ, NY – — Senior guard Tara Snavlin (Mendon, NY) scored 14 points to help lead Geneseo to a 63-51 win over SUNY New Paltz this afternoon at Elting Gym.
Snavlin made two three-point field goals in the first five and a half minutes of the second half to give the Knights a 40-26 lead with 14:35 remaining. Geneseo took its biggest lead of the game on a basket by junior guard Meghan Magee (Wynantskill, NY) at the 12:55 mark to extend their advantage to 44-27.
New Paltz (3-7, 0-3) tried to rally late in the second half and managed to cut the Knights’ lead to seven on two occasions. Two free throws by junior guard Maura McShane (East Rockaway, NY) narrowed the gap to 52-45 with 5:40 remaining but the Hawks were unable to pull any closer. Geneseo, who never trailed, scored the game’s first seven points to go ahead 7-0 five minutes in. Despite hitting just three of its first 15 shots, the Hawks managed to cut the Knights lead to 15-11 on a three-point field goal by junior forward Lindsay Dakin (Andover, CT) at the 9:43 mark.
Geneseo (6-4, 4-1) answered with an 11-4 run over the next five and a half minutes to take a 26-15 lead with four minutes remaining in the half and took a 30-22 margin into the lockeroom.
Snavlin was the game’s high scorer. Geneseo sophomore guard Laura Talbott (Penfield, NY) also reached double figures with 11 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the foul line.
Sophomore guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) was the leading scorer for the New Paltz with 12 points. Freshman guard Colleen Kelly (Hyde Park, NY) had 11 points and Dakin added 10.
