Strong Defensive Effort Leads Hawks Past Manhattanville
NEW PALTZ – — Senior forward Silver Williams (Newburgh, NY) scored 22 points and collected 12 rebounds to lead the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team to a 66-50 win over Manhattanville this evening at Elting Gym.
Williams scored four straight points to give the Hawks a 52-47 lead with 5:57 remaining. New Paltz (2-1) extended its lead outscoring Manhattanville 8-0 over the next three minutes to build a 60-47 margin with 1:32 remaining.
The Valiants (1-1) took a 45-44 lead with 9:42 remaining on two free throws by senior forward Kristina McRae (Brooklyn, NY). Manhattanville managed just five points the rest of the way and was held scoreless for nearly six minutes before a three-point field goal by senior guard Katelyn Thomas (Cortlandt Manor, NY) made it 63-50 with 1:13 to play.
Junior forward Lindsay Dakin (East Rockaway, NY) sank a key three-point field goal during the Hawks late second half run. She finished the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Freshman forward Tania Liberato (Brentwood, NY) helped lead the Hawks on a 12-4 spurt with five points late in the first half giving New Paltz a 26-18 lead with 1:14 remaining in the first half. Liberato had seven points and four rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench for head coach Brad Duckworth.
Manhattanville was led by junior guard Nicole Terzian (Bronx, NY) who had 11 points and seven rebounds.
